This 17th-century thatched Devon longhouse is situated in one of Devon's prettiest villages. One of a cluster of thatched cottages, it is furnished and decorated to a high standard, with beams and antiques adding to its `old-world' charm. The lovely Teign estuary is within walking distance and the delightful sheltered cove of Maidencombe beach lies just 2 miles away. Teignmouth, a resort made popular in the first half of the 19th century, and visited by the poet John Keats, is 4 miles distant and further on along the coast, the more sedate resort of Dawlish can be found, the seafront of which is spanned by a granite railway viaduct built by Brunel. The so-called English Riviera, embracing Torquay, Paignton and Brixham is within a short drive and enjoys a mild climate, making it popular with holidaymakers. The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway runs daily during the summer from Paignton's station near the harbour and connects the town with Goodrington Sands, before running alongside the Dart Estuary to Kingswear and the historic nautical town of Dartmouth in its beautiful setting. Places of interest nearby include historic houses and castles. Babbacombe Model Village and the Babbacombe Pottery, with Kents Cavern also worthy of a visit. Consisting of two parallel caves with stalactites and illuminated by flood-lighting, the caves aroused great archaeological interest in the 19th century, when remains of people believed to have been among the earliest inhabitants of Britain were discovered there. Dartmoor lies 8 miles away and represents southern England's greatest expanse of wilderness, roamed by wild ponies and sheep. Good walking locally and many NT properties to visit. Two award-winning pubs serving food, the nearest being 200 yards away.
